Environmental and socioeconomic impact assessment for Lake Sevan Region

Client: Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (Armenia)

Environment Group delivered the initial environmental and socioeconomic impact assessments for the rehabilitation of Gilli Lake and Marshes. This project established a comprehensive ecological and socio-economic baseline to guide large-scale landscape restoration and sustainable community development in the Lake Sevan region. By identifying environmental risks and formulating structured operational guidelines, our team provided the technical frameworks necessary to align these rehabilitation goals with international conservation standards.

The primary objective of this targeted assignment was to support the long-term restoration of the Gilli Lake and Marshes ecosystem, focusing specifically on recovering its natural ecology, native biodiversity, and vital carbon-absorbing capacity. To ensure a sustainable and scientifically sound pathway for this landscape rehabilitation initiative, Environment Group’s experts conducted thorough impact assessments to identify both potential positive and adverse environmental impacts. This analysis comprehensively evaluated the projected long-term effects of restoration activities on regional biodiversity, local ecosystem services, water resources, soil health, and overall climate resilience. Simultaneously, our team collected and analyzed baseline ecological and socio-economic data to establish a rigorous, evidence-based reference point for ongoing project monitoring and compliance tracking.

A major component of the project involved executing a detailed socio-economic impact analysis to carefully evaluate potential benefits and economic trade-offs for local populations. The assessment focused on creating pathways for sustainable community development, highlighting opportunities to improve rural livelihoods through the expansion of eco-tourism, climate-smart sustainable agriculture, and direct restoration-related employment. To build local ownership and ensure an inclusive planning process, Environment Group designed and conducted preliminary stakeholder consultations with local communities, municipal governments, and regional conservation actors. This participatory approach allowed the team to map out community expectations, address local environmental concerns, and identify potential ancillary benefits of the rehabilitation process.

Finally, Environment Group synthesized these extensive field findings to deliver final reports containing strategic recommendations for the physical and ecological restoration of Gilli Lake. We worked in close collaboration with FPWC to ensure that all proposed interventions were seamlessly aligned with leading international benchmarks and safeguards. To structure the implementation phase, our experts prepared detailed methodological recommendations for applying globally accepted frameworks, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards, IUCN guidelines for ecological restoration, and Arcadia Foundation environmental requirements. This technical architecture successfully bridged international conservation expectations with local realities, providing a clear roadmap for safeguarding the Lake Sevan ecosystem.
